Basic training course on drug addiction treatment counseling

In the morning of January 4, 2022, the Vietnam International Technology Transfer Center (V-ITTC), Hanoi Medical University in collaboration with the Department of Social Vices Prevention of Hanoi, opened a basic training workshop on drug addiction treatment counseling for more than 40 staffs who provide support and care for people who use drugs at religious rehabilitation centers from many provinces and cities across the country such as: Bethel Catholic Rescue Center, “Nguon Phuoc (Source of Blessings)” Rehabilitation Center, and “Tai Sanh (Rebirth)” Rehabilitation Center. The course has the participation of lecturers and experts from Hanoi Medical University, University of Labor – Social Affairs, and Center for Disease Control and Prevention of Hanoi.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr. Phung Quang Thuc, the Head of the Department of Social Vices Prevention of Hanoi, emphasized the importance of gaining science-based and methodical knowledge about addiction and treating drug addiction in the context of the Additional Drug Amendment Act, which will take effect from January 1, 2022. Moreover, Mr. Thuc shared about the dangers and effects of drugs on the user’s body, brain function and life quality, and some of the associations between drug use and the current social evils in Vietnam.

Pastor Nguyen The Trung, the leading representative of the Bethel Catholic Rescue Center, emphasized the importance of gaining professional knowledge and skills in addiction treatment based on science evidence. Also, Paster Trung hoped that this workshop would bring a lot of opportunities for the trainees and the lecturers to share their knowledge and real-life experiences and learn from each other.

The course will run in 5 days, from January 4 to January 8, 2022. In the first training session on the 4th, the trainees were provided with information, knowledge, and professional skills on drug addiction: basic knowledge about drugs and the consequences of drug abuse, scientific basis of addiction, ICD-10 diagnostic criteria for addiction, basic knowledge about methods of treating drug addiction including the complete program to treat drug withdrawal and the alternative addiction treatment program, and some key principles for ensuring optimal and successful treatment service.
