Following the training courses on “Motivational Interviewing” and “Contingency Management” as parts of the study “Screen, test, treat and retain methamphetamine-using people with opioid use disorders at methadone maintenance treatment clinics (STAR-OM)” (R01 DA050486), in 3 days from 26 – 28th November 2022, the Center for Training and Research on Substance Abuse – HIV (CREATA-H), Hanoi Medical University organized a training course on “Group Psychoeducation” for staff working at the methadone clinic of Tay Ho district.
With the participation of lecturers from the Vietnam International Technology Transfer Center (V-ITTC), Hanoi Medical University, the training course provided opportunities for trainees to share experiences and challenges while working directly with patients, gain extensive knowledge on group psychoeducation, and cultivate basic counseling skills needed to conduct a successful group psychoeducation session. After the training course, the trainees felt confident to implement group psychoeducation interventions in the upcoming period of STAR-OM.
The picture above displays the first group psychoeducation session with the topic “Addiction and its mechanism” conducted by Mrs. Hien – a counselor at the methadone clinic of Tay Ho district on the morning of November 2, 2022. In this session, patients were provided with some basic knowledge about addiction and the adverse effects of illicit drugs on the healthy brain, and common drug withdrawal symptoms in people who use methamphetamine.
