Training on Social Work for drug addiction treatment

On November 30, 2021, the Department of Social Vices Prevention of Hanoi in collaboration with the Center for Training and Research on Substance Abuse – HIV of Hanoi Medical University kicked off an intensive training course on social work for drug addiction treatment for 35 staff working in the local support groups in 5 districts – Thanh Xuan, Thanh Tri, Nam Tu Liem, Cau Giay, Hai Ba Trung – and staff working the Department of Social Vices Prevention of Hanoi. The course has the participation of lecturers from the University of Labor and Social Affairs and the Center for Training and Research on Substance Abuse – HIV of Hanoi Medical University.

In his speech at the opening ceremony, Mr. Phung Quang Thuc emphasized the need for training in order to equip the most updated knowledge and skills in counseling and drug addiction treatment for staff who were in charge of managing and supporting people using drugs. Also, Mr. Thuc hoped that after participating in this course, the trainees were able to gain more knowledge in drug treatment and drug prevention and had a chance to share their own experiences while working in the community with others.

Also speaking at the opening ceremony, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Le Minh Giang, Deputy Director of the Center for Training and Research on Substance Abuse – HIV, Hanoi Medical University shared about the important roles of social support in the community within the area of drug addiction treatment. Dr. Giang hoped that the trainees would have solid knowledge and a professional attitude in the process of supporting and helping people using drugs.

The course took place from November 30 to December 4, 2021. The course provided professional knowledge in social support such as social support skills, case management for people using drugs, counseling, working with family, and different ways of approaching people using drugs in the community.

At the end of the study period, the trainees had a chance to put what they had learned into practice at the local support points for people using drugs in the community and at drug addiction treatment centers.
