ICUDDR Conference 2023 in Chiangmai, Thailand

The annual conference of the International Consortium of Universities for Drug Demand Reduction (ICUDDR) was held in Chiangmai, Thailand for 3 days from 9-11 August 2023. The event was attended by more than 200 delegates who are experts, researchers and university representatives from 35 countries, 6 continents with an aim to promote cooperation and share updated knowledge about the prevention, intervention, and training in the substance use disorders field. This event contributed to raising awareness and knowledge about how to tackle the global drug problem.

The conference consisted of 5 plenary sessions and 15 symposium sessions. Plenary sessions focused on common drug demand reduction problems, including the global state of substance use, quality assurance for addiction programs, qualified and credentialed human resources working in the field, and challenges and opportunities in dealing with the global drug problem. Symposium sessions focused on specific topics such as emergent drug trends, new interventions, training programs and research findings in the field of substance use disorders, and the impacts of social issues on substance abuse.

Vietnam International Technology Transfer Center (V-ITTC) engaged in and shared Vietnam’s experiences through presentations on (1) Buprenorphine Treatment in Practice, (2) Developing the Research Capacity to Address Substance Use Disorders, Mental Health, and Sexual Risk at Hanoi Medical University and (3) Mapping Services to Explore Training Needs and Target Interventions. These knowledge-sharing sessions not only give experts and researchers at the workshop the opportunity to learn from practical experiences but also contribute to promote understanding and cooperation in drug demand reduction and other related problems in Vietnam.

Delegation of Vietnam to the conference also included representatives from the Center for Supporting Community Development Initiatives (SCDI), South Vietnam HIV and Addiction Technology Transfer Center (SVHATTC), Hai Phong Union of Science and Technology Associations and Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City.
